Determination of Amount of Water Required to Give the Paste for Normal Consistency Test

The Test ‘normal consistency or standard consistency test of cement paste’ is used to determine required quantity of water to produce a cement paste of standard consistency. It is necessary to fix the quantity of water to be mixed in a cement paste in each case for finding out initial setting time of cement, final setting time of cement, soundness of cement and compressive strength of cement paste.

The percentage of water required to produce a cement paste of standard consistency as taken as the minimum water required for complete hydration of cement particles. That means, in any case, the working Water Cement Ratio (W/C Ratio) cannot go below the normal consistency of the cement paste.

What is The Normal or Standard Consistency of a Cement Paste?

The normal or standard consistency of a cement paste is defined as that consistency which will permit the Vicat plunger to penetrate to a point 5 mm to 7 mm from the bottom of the Vicat mould. It is obtained as per IS: 4031 (Part 4)-1988.

Consistency test of cement gives us the workability of cement. It should not be too dry or too liquid form.

Factors Affecting the Required Quantity of Water to Produce a Cement Paste of Standard Consistency:

We determine the required quantity of water to produce a cement paste of standard consistency by normal or standard consistency test of a cement paste. The Normal consistency of cement paste depends upon the factors such as temperature and fineness of cement. Higher the temperature and higher the fineness of cement results higher the normal consistency of cement and vice versa.

Standard consistency of cement (water demand ratio) increases with increase in fineness of cement, because as the particles are ground finely the total surface area increases and the water needed to wet the surface of these particles will also be more.

The Required Quantity of Water to Produce a Cement Paste of Standard Consistency:

The result is merely the water/cement ratio expressed as a percentage. There is no accurate value for this question. It may vary with respect to concreting, plastering, tiling, etc. Typical values are in the range of 26% to 33%.
